"The Edge"

The Founding of Subjectivity and "Gonzo" in Journalism

An Introduction
Hunter S. Thompson was a famed writer and journalist most known for his book "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage journey into the American Dream". His unconventional behavior and lack of professionalism in his work had made him stand out in a time of political and societal angst. He later coined his form of journalism as "Gonzo" which didn't even quite work as a term. Nonetheless Hunter S. Thompson had broken the wall between subjectivity and objectivity, between fiction and nonfiction, and he had changed journalism and writing for years to come.

Thesis
Hunter S. Thompson’s first book, written in 1967, “Hell’s Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs” and with his first most notable article coming three years later being “The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved”, these two literacy pieces put Hunter S. Thompson in the spotlight for his ability to cross the barrier of objectivity and the conventional journalistic behavior for something extremely subjective and often unprofessional, In his own terms, “Gonzo”.
